Events we have been to:April 25-27, 2010 - Camporee - We silk screened our t-shirts, painted rocks, made friendship bracelets, cooked candied apples on the fire, earned an archery badge, learned to us a compass and read a topographic map, started the campfire without matches, sang songs and looked at the stars through a telescope. Mar 27, 2010 - Technology Day - We built our own lava lamps, controlled a robot, and simulated an earthquake with peanut butter and sugar cubes. Mar 12, 2010 - Thinking Day - We participated in the Parade of Flags and visited many countries around the world, represented by the other troops present. Our troop represented Spain. At our activity booth we had foam sword fighting. It was fun! We visited other "countries". In Italy we made pasta. In China we learned to use chopsticks. In Japan they served Edamame. In Barbados we met pirates. In India they made henna tattoos. In Australia there were kangaroo races - we were the kangaroos. In Switzerland there was chocolate and Swiss cheese. In Greece we questioned the Oracle at Delphi. In the United Kingdom we saw the London Bridge. We went fishing in the Philippines and found out about many animals in New Zealand. Feb 13-14, 2010 - Chinese New Year & Valentine's Day Sleepover - We made Origami boxes, Tigers, and Lucky Red envelopes. We talked about the Lion Dance, and some Chinese traditions. We stayed up late watching movies and eating popcorn. We made heart shaped marshmello treats to take home for our Valentines. For breakfast we cooked bacon bits and sauteed onions and bell peppers for our ziplock omelets. Dec 22, 2009 - Pajama Rollerskating - We went roller skating in our pajamas, and donated new pajamas to the Sacramento Children's Receiving Home. We skated round and round and around again. Oct 30-31, 2009 - Juliette Birthday Sleepover - To celebrate Juliette Gordon Low's 149th birthday we had a Sleepover. We baked cup cakes in ice cream cones then decorated them with different frosting colors and sprinkles, they tasted great! We each carved a pumpkin. One girl gave us a report about Juliette, that she had researched for school. We watched Halloween movies and ate popcorn. In the morning we baked cinnamon pull-a-parts. We modeled our wax mustaches, and ate Pez candy before it was time to go home. Sep 25-27, 2009 - Survivor Camporee - We survived, but it was hot! For the Potluck dinner we made Deviled Eggs, Chipolte Chicken, and Kitty Litter Cake! We attended many different activities during the day: Knots, Flags, Shelters, Fire Safety, Geocaching, Sit-upons, Leather crafts, and more. When it was so hot we stayed in the shade, drank lots of water, and squirted water in spray bottles on our faces and hair... we also dipped our bandanas in the ice chest and put them on our necks or heads to help stay cool! We sang songs around the campfire and made Smores. We sang a challenge to the Boy Scouts in the next camp over. We sang the loudest and they admitted that "Girl Scouts Rule!" June 5-7, 2009 - Camp Menzies Clean Up - It was raining when we got there, but as usual the food was great! The sun was out on Saturday morning so we were able to clear the trail from Arts & Crafts down to the Swimming Lake again, and then do some Archery or dissecting Owl pellets. When it started to rain again we washed the camp box dishes (three large tubs full) under the dining hall canopy. The rain let up a little while were were canoeing. In the evening, it was raining again, so we had a "campfire" program under the same dining hall canopy. It was fun and we learned several new songs. Sunday morning the sun was shining again and we were able to go horse back riding. Rain camping is fun when it is not too cold. May 15-17, 2009 - Family Campout at Negro Bar, California State Park - We went canoeing and made lanyards. The weather was so hot, we did not go on the Geocaching hike that we had planned. We tried to stay cool by throwing water at each other, that was fun! It was so hot we went to the Leader's house to swim in the pool - we were cool at last! Instead of Marco - Polo, we played Marshmello - Chocolate. We came back to the camp ground after the pool party and enjoyed making our own ice cream in ziplock bags again. May 9, 2009 - Golden Gate Bridging - We walked across the Golden Gate Bridge for our Junior to Cadette Bridging Ceremony. The bridge is 1.7 miles across. We traded swaps along the way with other Girl Scouts from California and seven other states. There were over 8,000 people there. After the walk we were tired, but there was a grassy hill that we could not resist rolling down over and over again. Then we did some crafts and activities in Crissy Field, before we headed for home. Apr 20, 2009 - Jump Sky High - We jumped on trampolines that covered the floors and walls. We played dodge ball on trampolines too! It was hot but lots of fun. Apr 4, 2009 - Backyard Campout - We set up all 3 tents and the giant dining fly by ourselves. We prepped and cooked all of the food by ourselves. For dinner we had chipotle chicken, fresh asparagus, mashed potatoes, and salad. For breakfast we had ziplock omlettes, fresh fruit/melons, chocolate muffins, and hot chocolate. We made our own ice cream in ziplock bags while sitting around the campfire after dinner. We filled up 4 big bags of trash from Cripple Creek on both sides of Sunrise Blvd. We had a "Survivor" style fire building contest. We practiced tying knots. We cooked in the box oven and on the camp stove (we forgot to set up the solar oven early in the day). Then we took down and packed up all of the tents and the dining fly ourselves. Mar 17, 2009 - Theater Badge Workshop - The Juniors went to Modesto and we made sock puppets and earned the Theater Badge. We played charades and talked about the names and personality of the puppets we created. Mar 1, 2009 - Car Sense - The next morning the Cadettes went to learn about taking care of cars and completed the Car Interest Project. We got to check the engine, tires, and get underneath the car. Feb 29, 2009 - Wildlife Conservation, Geocache Hike, Jonas Brothers Concert in 3D, Hot Tub Party, and Overnight - The Cadettes met up with the rest of the troop at the Wildlife Conservation Event, and then we went to our leaders house, where we went shopping for the meals we'd planned. After shopping we took a hike along the American River Bike Trail. One of our Dads joined us and taught us about Geocaching. We found 3 out of 4 caches and left a new one of our own. We also learned to identify Poison Oak along the trail, there was a lot of it, but no one broke-out in a rash. Then we walked over to the movie theaters and saw the Jonas Brothers Concert in 3D. We screamed a lot! After the movie we got in the hot tub and relaxed for a while. We didn't go to sleep until midnight. We made boiled eggs and had muffins and bananas for breakfast. Feb 28, 2009 - The Play's The Thing - The Cadettes went to Modesto and spent the night where we finished most of the requirements for the Theater Interest Project. We made up and performed skits and wrote a play of our own. Jan 31, 2009 - Cookie College - We wore our new orange Troop T-shirts, and got lots of compliments, it was a little embarrassing. We learned about the new cookie this year and practiced selling techniques. There were a lot of activities, cookies to taste, and fun. We passed out swaps to everyone. Dec 8, 2008 - Christmas Caroling & Coats for Kids - We sang Christmas songs in the park, after dark. It was cold, but we jumped around while we sang. And it was fun! Nov 22, 2008 - En Garde! - We learned the positions of fighting. We learned to advance, retreat, and lung. We got slapped with the sword by the instructor, to show us our fencing gear would protect us. We learned to parry with positions three, four and five. Then we played three-man touch. We had fun and want to fence again! Nov 20, 2008 - Roller Skating - We went roller skating, and it was a blast! We played Red Light, Green Light and one of our Scouts won. Our newest Girl Scout won the Door Prize Drawing! We got to request songs and dance under the disco ball. Nov 9, 2008 - Music in Motion - "All Shook Up" - The play was a musical comedy. It was so good! We loved the songs and the dancing. The story was funny too, everyone wanted someone that wanted someone else - but everyone was happy in the end. We want to go and see this one again! We'd like to see more plays! On the long drive to get there we sang some song and laughed a lot! We had cookies during intermission. Oct 27, 2008 - Juliette Gordon Low's Birthday Party - (The founder of Girl Scouts in America) Her birthday was on Halloween so we celebrated by wearing costumes, playing games, and having our pictures taken with "her." Oct 26, 2008 - Racquet Madness - Tennis We practiced balancing the ball on the tennis racquet, and race around the court. We learned to serve, lob and volley. It was fun and we want to play tennis again! Our leaders forgot to bring the snacks and we were hungry! Oct 4, 2008 - Gridiron Girls - We learned how to throw a football. We put on all the football pads, learned the positions and played a scrimmage game. It was fun. Aug 8, 2008 - Exploratorium in San Francisco - We climbed through an obstacle course in total darkness in the Tactile Dome. We did many science experiments and dissected a cow's eye. We tried to walk on gravel as quietly as we could, and sent steam rings to the ceiling. We walked under a ladder, broke a mirror, and drank out of a toilet bowl. We ate lunch outside by the fountains and feed the swans. Jun 6-8, 2008 - Camp Menzies Clean-up - We had great food again! We cleared and lined the trail from Oak Grove all the way to Forest Hill, and we raked pine needles away from the buildings in Oak Grove for fire protection. We also got to ride horses, go canoeing, do archery, paint neckerchiefs, play with clay, make lanyards, we sang lots of songs and taught some too, we did a skit at campfire, and we called and posted the colors for a flag ceremony. It was a busy weekend - and we want to go again next year! May 30, 2008 - Camp-o-ree at Rancho Seco - The wind was exciting when we first got there and tried to set up our tents! We had a tent pole break in two of our three tents. The wind was blowing so hard had to stake the tarps down before we could put the tents on them. As always food was our favorite part and it was great! For our first dinner we had a fireless, refrigerator-less meal of Beef Jerky, trail mix, dried fruits, and yogurt cover stuff. Ziplock omlettes are one of our favorites for breakfast along with bagels, cream cheese and fresh fruit. For lunch we made our own nachos with beans, meat, sour cream, olives, and lots of cheese. We made pineapple right-side-up cake in our solar ovens, along with tropical fruit salad to share for our luau potluck dinner. We also tried to make mango bread in our box oven - but the fire was too hot and the bread burnt. We'll try less charcoal next time. We lead songs around the first campfire and made smores the second night. Apr 26-27, 2008 - Backyard Campout - We raced to set up our tents - the winners got to make dinner and wash breakfast dishes, the other team got to wash dinner dishes and make breakfast. We made sit-a-upons, homemade butter and played games. For dinner we had box oven chipotle chicken and baked potatoes, but most of the corn on the cob burned. The dutch oven peach cobbler burned too - but we had a fun signing around the campfire. We made ziplock omlettes for breakfast with bagels and cream cheese. Then we made kick the can ice cream and ziplock ice cream to go with the cake for Lizzy's birthday. the ziplock ice cream was the best - we want make it again! Apr 26, 2008 - Creek Week at Arcade Creek. We picked up lots of trash, then went to the celebration at the Discovery Museum where we had lunch and played games at all the booths. Apr 5, 2008 - Girl Power - Our troop lead a song and started the Kerplop-Froggie game while we were waiting for the self defense lessons to start. We learned to scream "No!", to run away if we can, and to punch, kick, yell and make lots of noise when we need to! While punching the Martial Arts trainers one of our girls hurt her wrist and our leader put an ice pack on it. Later the doctor said it was sprained. Apr 4, 2008 - Sleepover - We spent the night at our leaders house after the Bingo & SWAPS event. We made a star with our sleeping bags - with our heads in the middle. We talked about relationships and being friends. We watched a movie, and talked about peer-pressure. We talked and giggled most of the night. In the morning we talked about healthy foods - and ate a healthy breakfast. We finished earning another badge, watched Alvin and the Chipmunks movie, the leaders wanted us to take a nap during the movie - but we didn't! We ate peanut butter sandwiches for lunch, and got ready for the Girl Power event. Apr 4, 2008 - Bingo & SWAPS - We walked through the park to the event from our leaders house. At the event gave us leis and we drank punch, ate chips, and traded our swaps, played Bingo - and one of our troop won a Bingo game and another won a raffle-door-prize prize! Then we walked back home, singing in the dark. Mar 8, 2008 - Rock'n Ropes at the Rocknasium in Davis. We loved climbing the walls! We were not all sure we could at first - but we made it to the top lots of times, and one of us used to be afraid of heights! Mar 7, 2008 - Brownies Rock at the Rocknasium in Davis. Two of us climbed the walls and so did our leaders! It was fun and we want to do it again next year! Feb 22,23,29 & March 2,7,9, 2008 - Cookie Site Sales - We sold 1,379 boxes of cookies! Sometimes it was windy and there were mosquitoes or it was boring - but we smiled, made eye contact, and ask everyone if they wanted to buy cookies, and even if they didn't buy cookies to say "Thank you anyway" or "Thank you for supporting Girl Scouts." Some people complimented us on our uniforms, our enthusiasm and politeness. Jan 13, 2008 - Cookie College We held our own Cookie College and learned about all the new cookies. We tasted them and played games about them. We did another cookie word search. We learned sales techniques, etiquette, and played games on the computer - on the TV, and we played tag outside too. Dec 14, 2007 - Ice Skating Night We ice skated round and round and round and round. We got to throw snowballs at each other too! Nov 29, 2007 - Roller Skate Night We roller skated round and round and round and round... Nov 18, 2007 - Color Guard, Attention We learned the proper way to honor and present the flag and hold it in a parade. We gave our SWAPS to lots of girls at the event. Oct 20, 2007 - Me and My Hero Masquerade Ball We dressed bears, threw wet sponges, tossed bean bags, tried to catch flying donuts with our teeth, spray painted our hair, put on tattoos, made whistle-type calls, catapulted ingredients into the witch's cauldrons for her brew, did the cake walk, chicken dance, monster mash, paraded in our costumes, and had our pictures taken! Sep 21-23, 2007 - Camporee We went to a rainy Camporee at Lake Oroville. We had the tents set up before dark, then we ate a high energy, fireless, non-refrigerated dinner. We liked our dinner so much, we will plan this meal again! We ate S'mores and S'mookies around the campfire, and we made S'mores kits for our SWAPs! It was wet but we had fun. Our favorite part of the trip was the food! Sep 17, 2007 - Recruitment event to show new girls what we do in Girl Scouts. We help the new girls make a "SWAP" of a girl in a sleeping bag. Aug 10-12, 2007 - Family Campout at the Middle Fork Consumnes Campground on Cat Creek Road was dusty and noisy but we had fun and made brownies in the solar ovens. We learned to tie a taut-line hitch and the life-saving bowline knot. We finished the Camp Together and Outdoor Fun badges. Jul 16-20, 2007 - Camp Menzies Summer Camp some of us went to Soccer camp and the others went to Camera Shots. We learned some new songs and want to go back again next year! Jun 16, 2007 - Rivercats baseball game and Girl Scout Parade around the stadium with our new troop banner, we also played in the jump houses. After the game players signed our souvenirs - and there was as a fireworks show! Jun 9, 2007 - Sunsplash! There were long lines - but we had a good time on the waterslides and in the wavepool. Jun 1-3, 2007 - Camp Menzies Clean-up We cleared trails, rode in canoes, washed dishes, sang songs, held a frog and a caterpillar, saw lizards, raised the flags, performed a skit at campfire and there was a mouse in our cabin when we went to bed! May 20, 2007 - Girls Time Out - We polished each others nails, wrapped our hair, massaged and hot-waxed our hands, made memory booklets, decorated photo frames, dressed up for photos and won several door prizes! May 19-20, 2007 - First Camping Trip, backyard style! We made spaghetti, s'mores, and ziplock omlettes. We put together our dunk-bag mess kits, sang songs, told scary stories, and talked all night long! We were cold at night and we'll bring warmer sleeping bags next time we camp! We learned not to cause erosion of the soil by 'broadcasting' the extra water. We also had a "Scouts Own" Ceremonial - remembering the best and worst parts of earning each of our patches. May 19, 2007 - En Garde at the Sacramento Fencing Club in Rancho Cordova - it was hot and sweaty inside the helmets, but we learned to advance, retreat, jump, lunge, block and fence! May 9, 2007 - Girl Power at Manteca High School in Manteca - It was a long drive but we sang songs along the way and ate McDonalds. We learned to say "No!", kick, punch, yell and make noise! Apr 28, 2007 - Court of the Queen at Griffith Quarry in Penryn. We got to shoot arrows, made books, mandolins, roses, cards, had our fortunes told, ate hot dogs and sat on our new "sit-upons." Apr 13, 2007 - Rockin' Ropes at the Rocknasium in Davis. We loved climbing the walls, we made it to the top lots of times - we took 180 pictures of each other, and shared our SWAPs that everyone wanted. Mar 2,3,9,11, 2007 - Cookie Site Sales - We sold 1,128 boxes of cookies! Sometimes it was hot and boring - but we remembered to smile, make eye contact, and ask everyone if they wanted to buy cookies, and even if they didn't buy cookies to say "Thank you anyway" or "Thank you for supporting Girl Scouts" and sometimes they bought cookies just because we were polite. Feb 25, 2007 - Save a Fluffy Friend - we cleaned up and restuffed the old teddy bears we brought. We made and decorated new t-shirts for our bears. We sang some songs and had snacks. Jan 13, 2007 - Cookie College at Sacramento City College. We learned about the cookies we will be selling, ways to sell them, and how they taste! We made a video commercial about the cookie sales. We also learned some cheerleading, made comfy flip-flops and ID badges. Another Troop gave us SWAPs - we are going to try to make some to share when we come back next year. (SWAPs are Special Whatchamacallits Affectionality Pinned Somewhere...) |
